Wind Cave National Park: A Surface-Level Visit

The landscape transforms upon entering the Black Hills.

Our first official destination in the Black Hills was Wind Cave National Park. Unfortunately, our timing coincided with a government shutdown, which meant that most of the park's facilities and famous cave tours were closed to the public.

Still, the gates weren't entirely locked. We were able to get out of the car, stretch our legs, and explore the beautiful landscape on the surface. As it turned out, the park’s most famous residents weren't observing the shutdown. The bison were out in force, and watching the large herd graze peacefully across the rolling hills more than made up for any initial disappointment.

Our first sighting: a lone sentinel on the horizon.

A pair on the move through the prairie.

A quiet moment with one of the park's giants.

The main herd grazing on the rolling hillsides.

Sometimes the best parts of a visit are the ones you didn't plan for.

The rugged granite formations that define the landscape.

Wherever you are today, I hope you find beauty even when the main path is closed.

When visiting national parks, it is important to remember: wildlife can be dangerous and unpredictable. These photos were taken with a 400mm lens from a safe distance. Always observe wildlife respectfully.
