A Calculated Retreat

Leaving the dreary hills outside Rapid City behind.

The best-laid plans often need a good-sense override. Our original itinerary had us enjoying Rapid City through Monday night, with a leisurely drive home on Tuesday. But after seeing the weather forecast, we made a change. The storm we experienced in the Badlands was just the smaller of two fronts moving in, so we decided to pack Devils Tower into our Sunday and make a run for it on Monday.

That dramatic shelf cloud confirmed our decision to leave.

The dramatic skies and the more-or-less constant rain that followed us all the way back to Denver was a clear validation of our choice. Curiously, our routing software seemed to be dodging the worst of it, constantly recalculating a zig-zagging path south.

Scotts Bluff, barely visible through the fog and rain.

It was a long, grey drive, but a fine one, getting us safely home a day ahead of schedule.

The landscape along Nebraska's State Highway 71.

Wherever you are today, may your road lead you safely home.
