The Faces of the Black Hills

The iconic view down the Avenue of Flags.

No trip to the Black Hills feels complete without visiting Mount Rushmore. It’s one of those places so ingrained in the American consciousness that seeing it in person is a genuinely awesome experience. The scale is immense, and the artistry is incredible.

An incredible feat of artistry and engineering.

Each presidential face was chosen to represent a crucial phase of the nation's first 150 years: Washington for its birth, Jefferson for its expansion, Roosevelt for its development, and Lincoln for its preservation.

The monument framed by a touch of fall color.

But the monument is as much a geological wonder as it is a historical one. It's all carved from the 1.7-billion-year-old Harney Peak Granite, a durable and beautiful rock rich with quartz, feldspar, and mica, making the mountain itself a fundamental part of the story.

A close look at the 1.7-billion-year-old granite canvas.

Wherever you are today, I hope you're surrounded by things built to last.
