Travelogue: Australia – Environmentalism

If you've stayed at a hotel any time in the past ten years, you've see them. Those stickers, placards, and door tags that tell you how the hotel you’re staying is all hot and bothered to save the environment and only you can do it!

They usually ask you to employ some code that will alert the chambermaid that you're environmentally minded and not some tosser that needs a freshly laundered towel every time you get wet. They say that if you will place your towel in a specific place, then you will identify that you're environmentally responsible and if not, you're wasteful.

The problem with these schemes is that they depend on the housekeeping staff to be as environmentally responsible as you choose to be. It depends on the room attendant not taking the towel you have hung in the shower on the rod and replacing it with one that has been freshly laundered for my pleasure.

All week I have been hanging my towel, all week it has disappeared and been replaced with a freshly laundered one. So much for environmentalism…

Wherever you are today, I hope you're doing your bit for the environment!
