There are certain places that are imprinted on your memory from childhood. For me, growing up in South Florida, Matheson Hammock and Key Biscayne were those kinds of places. So, on this trip, we took a day to drive down from our hotel in Fort Lauderdale and make a pilgrimage.

The drive itself, under the canopy of ancient trees, felt like traveling back in time. The destinations were just as I remembered them: the mysterious houses of Stiltsville floating on the horizon of Biscayne Bay, and the steadfast Cape Florida Lighthouse standing guard at the edge of the island. It's a powerful feeling to stand in a place you loved as a kid and find that the view is still the same. It was a day for soaking in the sun, the sea air, and a healthy dose of nostalgia.
