Blue Skies Over Golden

When you get an unexpected afternoon off and the Colorado sky is a brilliant, cloudless blue, you have to take advantage of it. We decided on a two-part hike around Golden to do some exploring and photography.

Looking south toward Green Mountain,
with some beautiful mountain wave clouds forming.

First, we headed up South Table Mountain for the short trek to the aptly named "Thumb Rock." After that, we drove over to Windy Saddle on the slopes of Mount Zion for even more expansive views. The air was crisp and clear, offering stunning panoramas across the valley and toward a snow-dusted Green Mountain. The highlight of the day, however, was stumbling upon a small herd of Mule Deer, including some yearlings, cautiously watching us from the brush. It was a perfect afternoon, full of sunshine, scenery, and surprise wildlife.

The destination for the first part of our hike:
the aptly named Thumb Rock.

The spectacular view looking north
across the city of Golden from the trail.

The beauty isn't just in the grand views,
but in the details along the trail, like this Buffalo Grass.

Mission accomplished! Two thumbs up for Thumb Rock.

The resilient Narrow Leaf Yucca,
perfectly adapted to the dry, sunny slopes.

The highlight of the hike was
spotting a small herd of Mule Deer.

This curious yearling stopped to watch us for a moment.

A final, closer look before it disappeared back into the brush.

Wherever you are today, I wish you a day full of blue skies and sunshine.
