After a beautiful sunrise on the Colorado plains, our eastward trek continued across Kansas on I-70. The morning started with the kind of vast, dramatic cloudscape that the high plains are famous for—a truly beautiful sight. A few hours down the road, however, the weather took a drastic turn.

We found ourselves navigating a thick dust storm that swallowed the horizon and made for some tense driving. It was a stark reminder of how quickly the sky can change out here.
