You don’t always need a plane ticket for a moment of genuine discovery. Sometimes, you just need to fill the bird bath and pay attention.
For years, my backyard has hosted a familiar and welcome cast of finches, sparrows, and robins. But last week, a new performer took the stage. Quick, sharp, and sporting a crisp black cap over a snow-white face, it was a bird I'd never seen here before: the White-breasted Nuthatch.
These energetic little dynamos are the acrobats of the avian world, famous for their unique ability to creep down tree trunks headfirst, defying gravity as they search for insects. Seeing one for the first time was a sharp, joyful reminder that there's always something new to see, right where you are. All you have to do is look.
