The Annual Autumn Drive: Day One

The journey begins, heading into the
mouth of the Cache la Poudre Canyon.

It's a trip we look forward to all year: the annual autumn color drive. This year, the first day's route took us north of Fort Collins and up the spectacular Cache la Poudre Canyon.

The canyon is famous for its dramatic
granite walls and rock formations.

Following this National Wild and Scenic River is always a treat, with the road twisting through tunnels and past dramatic granite walls, the water sparkling in the fall sun.

The sparkling, clear water of the Cache la Poudre River.

One of the iconic, rustic tunnels that dot the canyon drive.

The contrast of the cool blue water
and the warm fall colors was beautiful all day.

The intricate, sculptural forms of a deadfall along the river.

Higher up the canyon, the aspen colors were at their peak.

The drive climbs steadily, eventually taking us over the 10,276-foot summit of Cameron Pass, where the jagged peaks of the Nokhu Crags dominate the skyline.

The dramatic silhouette of the Nokhu Crags,
visible from near the summit of Cameron Pass.

Cresting the pass, the world opens up as you descend into the vast, beautiful basin of North Park. It was a perfect first day, full of classic Colorado scenery, before we settled in Steamboat Springs for the night.

An old homestead nestled in a golden aspen grove.

It's not just the leaves; the bright red hips of the
Sweetbriar were a beautiful detail.

After crossing the pass,
the world opens up into the massive,
beautiful basin of North Park.

A classic North Park scene:
a wide-open landscape dotted with cattle.

Wherever you are today, I hope your journey is as beautiful as the destination.
