There's always a touch of melancholy when a lovely visit with family comes to an end, but it's mixed with the quiet comfort of heading home. After a wonderful trip to Minnesota, it was time for an early morning flight back to Denver.

A Minnesota Reunion

 The main event of the day was a wonderful get-together for the Korkowski Cousins' Luncheon at The Old Mill in Urbank, but the journey there and back was an adventure in itself. We took a road trip through the heart of Minnesota, soaking in the gorgeous autumn colors.

The Annual Autumn Drive: Day Two

 Day two of our annual drive required a strategy: leave Steamboat Springs at "butt ugly early o'clock." The goal was to get ahead of the weekend crowds on Trail Ridge Road, and we were about to find out just how smart that decision was.

The day started in the pre-dawn darkness in Steamboat Springs.

The drive into the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park is a sobering experience now, passing through the vast burn scar of the 2020 East Troublesome Fire.

It’s a stark landscape, but beautiful in its own resilient way. As we climbed, the scenery transformed, rising above the treeline into the breathtaking alpine tundra. The views of the Never Summer Range were spectacular under a perfect blue sky.

It was great to see signs of life thriving in the area's waterways.

A moment of perfect, glassy reflections in the crisp morning air.

After crossing the summit, we descended the eastern side, catching the last remnants of fall color. And then we saw it: a miles-long backup of cars waiting to get into the park from the Estes Park entrance. Our early start had paid off in spades. It was a spectacular finale to our annual color pilgrimage.

This was the miles-long backup waiting to get in the east entrance.
Our early start was definitely the right call.

The Harvest is In!

There's a special kind of satisfaction that comes from gardening, and it's never more apparent than on harvest day. After a summer of growth, my pumpkin harvest is finally in!

It's not a massive haul, but these two beauties are the result of a season of sun, water, and patience. The vibrant orange one is ready for classic jack-o'-lantern duties, while the dark green one might have a future as a pie. Whatever their fate, seeing them ready to be picked is one of the true markers that autumn has arrived.

Wednesday's Unscheduled Light Show

 It started as a quiet, ordinary morning. I was getting ready for the day when I noticed a strange and brilliant glow fill my office. The entire room was bathed in a warm, orange light that you just don't see every day. That was my cue. 

It's not every day the sky tells you to stop what you're doing and come outside.
This was the view from the front yard this morning.

When the sky puts on a show like that, you don't hesitate. I grabbed my camera and stepped out into the front yard to find the neighborhood painted in these incredible, fleeting colors.

Backyard Birdwatching

 One of the simple joys of being home is watching the steady stream of visitors to our backyard bird feeders. We make an effort to keep them stocked with a good variety of seeds, nuts, and suet, and our feathered neighbors seem to appreciate the buffet.
