The Importance of Being Earnest

"I hope you have not been leading a double life, pretending to be wicked and being good all the time. That would be hypocrisy."
The Importance of Being Earnest- Oscar Wilde
Once again, the Right has shown their devotion to the hypocrisy of their personal interest morality. You see it all the time! The rage machines on the right decry the indecency of some sin or another – and then they are discovered to be guilty of it and their tune changes rather rapidly.

Homosexuality was an abomination and gay people deserved no rights according to the former Vice President. Then Dick Cheney’s daughter came out and now he supports gay marriage. And it is not just politicians on the right who are so hypocritical…

New Life Church minister Ted Haggard was a notoriously outspoken proponent of tougher laws against drugs and strengthening the laws protecting those whose “religious convictions” make them want to deny rights to people based on sexual orientation. Well, he was until his drug dealer – who also happened to be a homosexual prostitute he was paying for sex – outed him. Almost immediately he claimed that his crimes were not that serious and that his god would forgive him.

So, what has set me off this time? Listening to Ted Cruz "discover" that Donald Trump is a vile misogynist. I found it interesting that Cruz did not seem to mind that his competitor has spewed forth his vitriol against opponents, protestors, and journalists… but post one unflattering picture of Heidi Cruz and all the sudden this behaviour is beyond the pall? To paraphrase the right-wing journalist William F. Buckley, I will not insult your intelligence by suggesting that you really believe that he actually believes what he just said.

It is irony at its most delicious that this, the same behaviour that has benefited his otherwise asterisk-worthy campaign, is now something that he has suddenly discovered is bad. No he hasn’t! He simply does not like the fact that his wife is not the target?

Let’s face it; there are plenty of people who are far more qualified to be president than Ted Cruz. There are certainly lots of people who are less obnoxious and offensive than Ted Cruz. Some of these people even ran for president this cycle. But for Cruz to condone this behaviour, even tacitly via his silence, is no difference than the conversion of point of view of the right simply because it now impacts them.

Truly good people do not remain silent while people behave hatefully around them, speaking-up only when they become the target of the venom; there is another word for that.
"And what sort of lives do these people, who pose as being moral, lead themselves? My dear fellow, you forget that we are in the native land of the hypocrite."
The Picture of Dorian Gray

- Oscar Wilde
Wherever you are today, I hope that you will speak up against hypocrisy wherever you find it!
