There is nothing quite like gathering the family together for dinner outdoors on a pleasant Colorado evening.

My niece Liz and my brother Dennis came down to visit us in Colorado Springs, giving us the perfect excuse to settle into a comfortable patio for good conversation, hearty laughs, and great food. We were not entirely alone in our dining, however. Perched high above us on the roofline, a rather plump Eurasian collared dove kept a watchful, curious eye on our table the entire time—presumably hoping someone would drop a crumb.
